In Minoa Since 1938

Russell H. Schepp, great-grandson of Marcus Schöpp who settled in the northern portion of the town in the early 1830’s, was a life-long resident of Minoa & communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Russ graduated Minoa High School and Simmons School of Embalming. He initially assisted his uncle Ernest and cousin Francis who ran an undertaking firm in Canastota, (Ernest started his business in Kirkville).

In 1938 Russ became a licensed undertaker. Russ served families in the Minoa area from his parent’s home on Main Street just north of the village. In 1950 Russ built a funeral home on East Avenue in Minoa. He continued to expand the funeral facility with major remodeling in 1960 and 1983. For many years Russ was a janitor at the Minoa School as well as the school’s first bus driver; later he served on the Minoa School Board. He also ran Schepp’s Gas Service in the 1950’s & 60’s. Active politically, he was the Town of Manlius Zoning Officer and served as Minoa’s Mayor for many years.

Thomas R. Schepp joined his father in 1979 and the funeral home was then known as Russell H. Schepp & Son Funeral Home. Though Russ “officially” retired in 1981, he remained active with the funeral home until just a few months before his death in 2003. In 2004 Russ’s grandson Erich became the fourth generation to continue the family tradition in funeral service.
