Ned Schepp, 83, passed away on Sunday at Menorah Park after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was a life resident of Onondaga County. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, he was not sent to Korea but rather to Germany where he played the piano for the Officers Club.
Ned was a 1951 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, a Lemoyne College graduate in 1959 & a Columbus School of Law graduate from Catholic University Law School in Washington, DC in 1962.
Ned was past president of the Greater East Syracuse Jr. Chamber of Commerce. He was an assistant State Attorney General from 1962-1966, a practicing Central New York Civil Trial Attorney from 1963-2003, and served as DeWitt Town Justice from 1968-1987. Ned was on the Board of Directors for the Onondaga County Bar Association, and was honored to be selected for “Best Lawyers in America”. He was also a member of the DeWitt Rotary and volunteered at the Francis House.
In retirement, Ned became a New York State Certified Ombudsman for residents of Onondaga County Long Term Care Facilities and he volunteered as Board President for Meals on Wheels Eastern Onondaga County.
Ned was predeceased by his parents Henry Edward & Helen Clarke Schepp of East Syracuse.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Judy McKee Schepp; four children, Mark (Heather) Schepp of Charleston, SC, Tara (Rob) Robinson of Fletcher, NC, Bill (Janie) Dutch, Jr. of Manlius, NY and Katie (Rob) Martin of Excelsior, MN; a sister, Adele (Denny) Young of Wellsboro, PA; nine grandchildren, Smith and Ella Mae Schepp, McCrea and Harper Robinson, Abby and Michael Dutch and Will, Lucas and Josie Martin and several nieces and nephews.
Ned took great pride in his yard, enjoyed golfing and skiing with family, friends and loved spending time at the beaches of NC and FL with his wife. Ned had a great sense of humor, he loved telling and laughing at his own jokes, in fact his humor stayed with him into the last stages of Alzheimer's.
The family wishes to thank Latoya Gallishaw, Jeanette Rodriquez, Cindy Mike and Wayne Glover for their compassion and care. Thank you, Menorah Park staff, for providing years of care and to Fran Berg, music therapist, who kept music in Ned’s life over the past several years.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 7 from 4 to 7 pm at Eaton Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 East Genesee Street, Fayetteville, NY. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Ned’s life will be held Saturday, April 8 at 10 am at Holy Cross Church, 4112 East Genesee Street, Syracuse, NY 13214. Private burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
